Mary Lou Retton, Annie, Dominique Dawes, Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie from Full House), Mariah Carey, Betty Okino, Kristi Yamaguchi, Dawn Staley, David Tutera, Guiliana Rancic, Robin Roberts, and the list goes on. (Sigh)
These are all the people that I thought…no scratch that… that I KNEW I was going to be like someday.
✋ Hello, my name is Kim Osborne and I used to be a multiple-passionate dreamer.
I wasn’t just your lay-in-bed-and-think kind of dreame. Nope, I was your lay-in-bed-and-think-then-get-up-and-write-a-letter-or-make-a-phone-call-to-see-how-I-can-make-that-possible, kind of dreamer. You know the kind that insisted on try and doing EVERYTHING!?!
I started at an early age. By age 3 I knew that I was going to be Annie, so I would belt out “Tomorrow” on demand. (Can you imagine how excited I was about the remake? Now my daughter and I sing “Tomorrow” together!)
As I grew bigger, so did my passions. I had no rhyme or reason, whatever I was into at the time was what I knew that I’d do forever. Cute story huh? It’s not so cute when you are a twenty-something adult and you STILL can’t decide what direction to take!
So, what do you do when you have multiple directions that you’d like to take in life?
Here are 4 Places to Look that will help narrow your passions down a little bit and get more direction.
Look Back
Being that I used to teach young children (if you didn’t know, you can get all caught up here), I got the privilege of seeing a young mind dream before anyone or anything told it that it was impossible. It was such a blessing to especially see my little girls have faith in what possibilities of life they had. Fast forward about 20 years and the story is normally different.
I invite you to go back to your 5 year old self (or any age as a child). What did you dream of being? What were you good at? Who did you want to help?
Sometimes we get lost in the translation of life, when our original answer was there all along. Try going back to remind yourself of who you used to admire.
Look In
If you dig down deep enough, you probably already have the answer inside of you. Most of us do. We normally just stop ourselves before we answer what we want to be and instead tell ourselves what we THINK we can be. It often happens without us even knowing that this is what we are doing.
Finish this sentence, if money wasn’t an object and I knew I couldn’t fail, I would ___________________.
The answer to this question is more than likely what you REALLY would like to do. You just probably dismissed it as unfeasible.
Look Out
If you are still having a hard time, I can guarantee that you I know some people that would LOVE to tell you what you should do! Talk to your support system. You know like your mom, your bestie, your boo. Pick at least 10 people that you trust to have your best interest in mind to give you honest feedback.
It may feel awkward at first, but believe me when I say it is one of the most powerful things that you can do.
Just ask them to tell you what they think you are really good at and would be great at doing for a living.
If anything, it will give you a good shot of feel-good in your arm and let you see yourself through the eyes of someone else. Sometimes, a fresh pair of eyes can help you see things straight.
Look Up
Did you think you’d get through this whole thing without looking to the one that created you? God literally made us to complete His mission. Why wouldn’t He want us to find the direction that He sent us here to take?
Take some time to talk to God and ask Him for clarity in the path that He sent you here for.
We’ve already established that using God’s AAA card will help you with this process, so just trust that He will lead you when the time is right.
If you are looking, than you are already in the right direction. Many people don’t even search for their purpose. What a waste of life!?!
How will you ever know the life that was truly meant for you if you never even try to find it?
I know, I know. It feels like you’re never going to figure it out. I spent many, many years wanting to pull my hair out over it, but eventually it came to me. I even wrote a free e-book to help other multi’s (I gave us a pet name) like me.
In the long run, I realized that I actually wasn’t as off as I thought in the first place. Although I was all over the place with the people that I stalked admired, they all had one thing in common. They were all people that lived in their greatness. People that had found their purpose and were sharing it with the world.
It wasn’t their skill, but their drive, focus, and courage to pursue their passion. That’s what I truly admired!
You see? I wasn’t that off. After I did all of my “looking”, I realized that my purpose was to help as many people as possible be just like that. Driven, focused and courageous enough to pursue their passion. Y’all are about to make me get excited in here!
You can do the same thing, it just takes a little time and patience. Listen to your heart and don’t be afraid of what it tells you. It often is the one true guide that won’t lead you astray. That’s worth a tweet!
Today’s Think Tank:
Having trouble narrowing things down a bit? What are some of the areas that you are debating between? Perhaps someone can help you get clarity on them. As always, I’ll continue to pray for you to have more clear direction and ask that you pray for mine as well too. Until the next time we meet, BE BLESSED AND BE A BLESSING!
XOXO,
Kim
